The College of Education has 3 departments, with 64 members of our faculty, serving over 2000 undergraduate students from the College of Education, the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Science.

We are currently providing online access to our teacher certification programs to over 275 individuals throughout the state of Texas with our Alternative Teacher Certification Program for people who have degrees in areas other than education and would like to be certified.

Since 1986 we have certified and placed in schools over 2500 teachers who have completed their teaching certificates. In the past several years, we have migrated all 24 teaching certificate areas to an online format. Over 100 students have already completed their certificates online. There is tremendous potential for growth and we intend to serve new students in this capacity.

Out of over 3600 graduate students on UTEP’s campus, over 39% of them are enrolled in the College of Education - including close to 100 doctoral students in the pipeline. These graduates and current students are engaged in research on issues relevant to the U.S. - Mexico border to examine impacts of culture and language on school achievement and many other topics of interest to this community and beyond.

Our doctoral programs include an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Administration and a Ph.D. in Teaching Learning and Culture. As you can see, we prepare all sorts of professional educators at all levels.

There is a myth that we prepare only elementary school teachers. We prepare teachers at elementary, middle school, high school, college, university faculty, researchers and more! Our current COE students and alumni have also been successful outside of the field of education, but attribute much of what they learned as teachers to their successes. We invite you to come share in our students success and be a part of the future in the College of Education.

Mission

The mission of the College of Education is to prepare effective teachers, counselors, diagnosticians, and school administrators, who successfully address the problems of schools and other youth serving agencies, especially in communities with a significant Hispanic population.
