The Special Education Program is committed to the preparation of teachers who can assume the advanced roles which special educators are called upon to fill. We offer an integrated core and performance-based courses that meet national and state standards.
Special education teachers work with students who have a variety of disabilities. While some work with students dealing with mental retardation or autism, the majority of special education teachers work with children with mild to moderate disabilities, using the general education curriculum, or modifying it, to meet the child's individual needs. Once we receive your transcript evaluation from the Graduate School, we will determine if you meet the criteria to be interviewed. If your GPA is at least 3.0 in your undergraduate course work (cumulative) OR in your major OR in your upper division course work and you have submitted all required documents, you are eligible to be interviewed and to take from 6 to 9 hours during the semester in which you are interviewed. Please refer to the New Student Information Form (also attached) which explains the interview and acceptance process in greater detail.
The master's degree in Special Education is not sufficient to be certified as a Special Education teacher. You must complete an additional 6 semester hours of special education course work (SPED 4330 and SPED 4340).
